Earthquakes happen all of the time in California.  These shots are from 1998 when a 7.1 quake hit not far from my home.  Called the Hector Mine quake, it broke the surface of the desert near Ludlow.  I drove there to find the cracks on the desert.  Unfortunately, the earthquake occurred in the middle of an army bomb training area.  Unexploded ordinance was all around.
